Lost childhood

By

Sitting on the curbside
Under the setting sun
She looked at me and said
“You look like a little girl”
Her words struck a nerve
I looked at her with teary eyes
Because it reminded me
Of those faint memories
Of a childhood
That I only remember through photos
Of a childhood
That I don’t remember living
Of a childhood
That never existed for me
For in that childhood
I was licking my own tears
Caressing my own wounds
The only positive words for me
Coming from my own tongue
I was my parent
I was my therapist
I was my healer
So I don’t remember
Being a little girl
Because I was never that little girl
I was never that little girl…
